How much is 100 Watts of energy?
The notion of ‘energy’ is becoming more and more ubiquitous these days, although very few of us really know with what methods, from what sources and how much of it can be produced, or how much of it do we have in stock. How much is used in a household, in an economical sector or in a country?

The objective of the e-wheel project is to present how much energy can an average person effectively produce for everyday purposes - like amplifying music, charging laptops, mobile phones and other mobile devices or simply moving around - with the help of a special bicycle.

The indirect aim is to evoke interest in the field of energy and energy efficiency while articulating the role and possibilities of the ever-present electricity in our everyday lives.

The bike
The bike was already presented numerous times. We’ve built the 500 Watt rated power engine/generator into a vintage black Waffenrad, an average citybike and also a completely custom built bicycle made of waste iron.

The electronics
Electric and also energy producing bikes have been present for decades already. Our electronic solution is not new either but we are proud of our compact system which can be easily carried in a briefcase. The whole system contains the following:
- lithium-polymer battery
- charge-controller
- 220V and USB plugs
- amplifier
- regenerative rear-break system which feeds kinetic break energy back to the battery
- electric drive

Communication
The project’s main massage is to present the limits of human powered energy-production in practice, along with the effective use of the produced energy.
Using descriptive infographics and animations, we intend to demonstrate the energy producing capacity of an average human (~ 100 Watts) compared to the energy demand of an average household. We will also put the energy demand of different countries (with Hungary in focus) and sectors of the economy in context.

Renting
The e-wheel can be rented for any event. We provide amplification as well if needed.

E-wheel

Our task was to provide music for the event where kids queued up to contribute by pedalling.

o

During E-wheel project we are trying to present, how much energy need for a average household, or how much energy do we produce with our body.

o

During Summer our E-wheel appeared at four outdoor events as music provider. With our beloved DJ, Ezüstmedve Szabi we could entertain the audience independently from any external energy supply.

o

The experiences gathered at these type of events help us explore the general perception and understanding of electric power.

o

The creation of E-wheel was accelerated by the Energy Day in Vienna as in September 2010 we had to present our creation together with other environment- and energy-consciuous organisations.
